"The research is devoted to the study of Ukrainian polar explorers’ readiness for extreme environments of the station \"Academician Vernadsky, being Ukrainian Antarctic station where scientific observations have been conducted for more than 25 years. The relevance of the study is substantiated; the scientific papers of domestic and foreign researchers dealing with the problem of person’s readiness for life in extreme environmental conditions are analyzed. The concept of readiness for extreme environmental conditions is specified; the age limits of the studied groups of Ukrainian polar explorers are determined; methodological tools of psychological research are presented. Theoretical bases and practical results of studying the readiness of the Ukrainian polar explorers for in the conditions of Antarctica on an example of 9 expeditions to this region are considered. The three aspects of readiness of the person for activity in the conditions of Antarctica are differentiated: psychophysiological, personality, social-psychological. The peculiarities of psychological training of Ukrainian polar explorers in the conditions psychologically close to real ones are described. The complex of methods of psychological research of the peculiarities of readiness of the persons of three age categories is implemented. The results of empirical research for previous winters according to the indicators of readiness of different age groups of polar explorers are presented. The comparison of the results of the research conducted during the expeditions has revealed some changes in psychological characteristics. It is proved that the most prepared age group for life in Antarctica includes middle-aged persons (aged from 35 to 45 years). The representatives of this group make up about 40% of the participants in Ukrainian Antarctic expeditions, which indicates a sufficient level of psychological stability of wintering teams. These results enable to identify new criteria for psychological prediction, as well as to confirm the need for further psychological research concerning the training of psychologically stable persons for the Antarctic winter."^^ .
