Teaching Students to Create Translation Memories in SDL Trados Studio

The paper presents a structured pedagogical approach to teaching students how to create, populate, maintain, and exchange Translation Memories (TMs) in SDL Trados Studio. The author highlights the educational value of TMs in reinforcing terminology consistency, developing awareness of translation patterns, and promoting reflective, data-driven decision-making. A four-stage workflow is proposed: (1) creating a new TM with appropriate language settings and custom fields; (2) populating it with real bilingual content; (3) updating and maintaining the memory through confirmed segments; and (4) exporting/importing TMs for collaboration and creating reliable backups. Practical teaching strategies include pair work, mandatory backup routines, use of authentic “messy” data, early discussion of confidentiality issues, and process-oriented assessment rather than focusing solely on the final translation product. The ultimate goal is to shift students from viewing translation as a one-off task toward understanding it as the strategic management of reusable linguistic assets.
