Reference, understood as the relationship between linguistic units and the entities they denote, enables the recurrence of meaning without unnecessary repetition, while coreference establishes interconnected chains of expressions that contribute to characterisation and narrative coherence. The analysis explores the challenges posed by pronominalization, synonymic substitution, and the rendering of stylistically marked units across languages.
